Biography

As a visual artist, Yasser Ballemans (Breda, 1981) is interested in the role of art in rituals, such as parades, campfires, carnival and commemorations. He researches how ornaments, decorations and “old-fashioned” techniques can be used in a contemporary way. Collective design and manufacturing processes play a major role in this. Monumental sculptures in public space are located in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Nieuwegein, Utrecht and the Arnhem Palace of Justice, among others. Ballemans has had several solo exhibitions, including Museum de Fundatie (Heino), Onomatopee (Eindhoven), Park (Tilburg) and Gallery Joey Ramone (Rotterdam). In addition, his work has been shown in group exhibitions in China, Curaçao, England, France and South Korea. In the Netherlands he took part in group exhibitions at Beeldhalwerk, Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, W139 and the Africa Museum. In addition to his work as a visual artist, Ballemans was a curator, entrepreneur, teacher and producer in the art world. Among others as curator at the Blue House and as producer for Freehouse and Face Your World. For Kunstpodium T Ballemans is Yearmaster of the Apprentice Master project in the 2021/2022 season. Ballemans teaches at the Education (BA) and the Crossover Creativity (MA) department at the HKU. In his contemporary work Ballemans is researching ways to create platforms for interactive and interdisciplinary creativity. Like he does in the Soul Search City project. Ballemans received his bachelor's degree in visual arts from the art academy AKV / St. Joost (Breda), graduated in 2007 (MA visual arts) from the Sandberg Institute (Amsterdam) and followed the Mr Miyagi Curators Master Class of Showroom MAMA in Rotterdam in 2005.
